Three persons were charged at the District Court of Helsinki in relation to the National Bureau of Investigation’s (NBI) criminal suspect list which had erroneously included the name of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Two of the suspects are high-ranking police officers, and the third is a civil servant responsible for maintaining the database.

The prosecutor called for heavy fines to be handed to the trio responsible for maintaining the criminal register.

The three who have been prosecuted for dereliction of duty have all denied the charges.

According to the prosecutor, the police list of suspects was manhandled and named people who did not deserve to be in the list.

The suspects list according to the law can have information about people who are suspected of committing or having committed a criminal offence which could lead to imprisonment.

In addition, information of a person can be entered in the register if there are grounds to suspect that a person contributes or contributed to a criminal offence which could lead to an imprisonment of over a year.

Drug use offence is also subject to entry in the register.

Earlier, the prosecutors had stated that entering Putin's name into the register of criminal suspects can be considered illegal.

In April 2013, the Finnish commercial TV channel MTV3 disclosed that the name of Russian President was on a criminal suspect registry of Finland's National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

The leak caused huge embarrassment for the Finnish government and the NBI. Both made apologies to Putin subsequently over the issue in April last year.

The pre-trial investigation into the case was launched by the Finnish police in April 2013, soon after the incident was revealed by media.
