FTimes-STT Report, Sep 15

There are more than 9,100 people currently registered with the Finnish reception centres for asylum seekers. The immigration agency explains that the centres are now operating at 140 per cent, meaning that every centre is now overpopulated.

New centres are being planned, for example, in Jyväskylä, Joutsa and Kauhava. The town of Forssa has already opened a temporary centre to accommodate 200 people. In Joutsa, the centre will be opened in a hotel, where only the utilities will need to be paid. The owner has announced that rent will not be charged for the use of the premises.

By the end of the month, new centres are due to open in Kouvola, Raseborg, Kontiolahti and Ruovesi.

The immigration service is developing a variety of solutions for accommodations in Vantaa, Vihti and Seinäjoki.

This evening, representatives in Keuru are due to discuss again the location for a new reception centre. The city’s decision makers are opposed to the plan.

The Finnish immigration service planned to set up a centre in the former garrison in downtown Keuru. The preliminary plan would provide accommodation for about 500 people.
