File Photo – Lehtikuva. About 450 new asylum seekers arrived in the country from Sweden through Tornio border early Wednesday evening.
Over half of them were directed to the Puta sports hall and await processing in the registration centre, said the Lapland police.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, the police registered more than 500 asylum seekers in the temporary registration centre.
As a result of the increased border control presence, thirty refugees were brought to the registration centre while a dozen seekers were turned back to Sweden.
According to Finnish Immigration Service director general Jaana Vuorio, Finland needs more reception centres, one way or another.
He pointed out municipalities where the centres do not yet exist, and that increasing the reception capacity is now a problem all over the country.
It is already clear that Finland has received more applications for asylum in the month of September than in the whole first half of the year, Vuorio told STT in an interview.
