The number of fatal accidents on roads has increased this year, according to the Finnish Motor Insurers’ Centre (LVK).
A total of 173 fatal accidents resulting in the deaths of 182 people had occurred by the end of August this year.
This figure is an increase compared to the corresponding period in last year which saw 150 fatal accidents that claimed the lives of 159 people.
By the end of August, 21 pedestrians and 18 cyclists died on the road. The situation regarding the death of pedestrians is the worse in five years.
“Pedestrian and cyclist accidents often happen to the elderly. But this year an alarmingly high number of accidents have also happened to under 15-year as well as under 25-year old age groups,” said Tapio Koisaari, liaison manager at the Finnish Motor Insurers’ Centre.
The statistics are sourced from road investigation accident boards.
