The treasury bench won a vote of confidence in the parliament on Friday after Juha Sipilä’s government had presented a package designed to improve competitiveness earlier on Wednesday.

The lawmakers voted 115-53 in favour of the government proposal while 27 members of the parliament remained absent.

Prime Minister Juha Sipilä on Wednesday presented the competitive package before the parliament. The package was further changed on Monday evening, substituting Sunday and overtime pay cuts with reduction of holiday bonuses.

The opposition have expressed serious doubts whether the package will create new jobs in the country.

The package can still be changed since labour market organisations are trying to compile an alternative solution.

The oppositions Vihreä liitto (Green League) and Vasemmistoliitto (Left Alliance) on Wednesday called for the confidence vote on the issue.

The main opposition Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland) proposed the package to be examined by a committee as an alternative to the confidence vote. The request of the party was, however, turned down.
