The representatives of the Sámi Parliament for the four-year term period, from 2016 to2019, have been elected.

There were a total of 37 candidates and 21 among them were elected.

According to preliminary information, the turn out increased to 51 percent, while four years ago it was 49 percent.

The electoral commission will announce the official results of the election today.

The total votes cast rose to about 3,000.

Janne Näkkäläjärvi, the chair of the Sami Parliament Electoral Commission believes that the turn out percentage rose because the Supreme Administrative Court proclaimed 93 people to be Sámi and in effect registered in the Sámi Parliament electoral register.

The voting took place on Sunday enabling new registered Sámi to vote during this autumn election.

“We are as a small nation and a small number can also influence who will be elected,” Näkkäläjärvi said.
