The ongoing Air Force exercise that started on Monday and will continue till Friday involves 2,400 airmen and 50 aircraft.

The exercise will be held throughout the country and will be conducted in simulated warfare situation.

Air defence will be the main task but also simulation of surface to air activities will be conducted for the first time during this scale of exercise, said Jari Mikkonen, the newly appointed Commander at Karelia Air Command.

The F/A-18 Hornet multirole fighters are currently fitted with surface to air arsenal. The work is expected to be finished at the end of next year. The Air Force currently has over 60 Hornets. At the same time, the old Hawk training aircraft will be renewed.

The Air Force carried tests of new arsenal installed on Hornets in Lapland back in June. The tests were aimed to verify the functionality and effectiveness of the weaponry system against different targets.

The Defence Forces said the exercise will take place in between 6 am and 10 pm. However, occasional flights may be airborne outside this time window.
