Currently, the only group home for minor asylum seekers is found in Espoo.

The goal is to open a 26-bed group home for children in November.

The need for group homes is dire since about a thousand unaccompanied minors have arrived in the country this year.

A total of 196 unaccompanied minors arrived during the whole of last year.

The majority of the minors arriving are aged 15-17, but the youngest ones may be under 10.

The majority of minor asylum seekers come from Iraq, Somalia and Afghanistan.

The role of the group homes is to provide with necessary care and nurture to children until their residence applications are processed, and if necessary even afterwards.
