The peaceful demonstration, according to the organisers, was attended by thousands; however, the police assessed that the number would be about 700.
The protesters expressed disapproval at the planned cuts in pensioners’ housing allowance, freeze of pension index increase and other social benefits as well as increase of medical and pharmaceutical expenses liability.
According to the organisers, the measures hit hardest the most vulnerable pensioners.
The demonstration was organised by the Central Association of Finnish Pensioners (EKL) and the pensioners’ organisers Eläkeläiset ry.
