President Sauli Niinistö on Saturday predicted that the flow of refugees into the country will continue in the coming years.

Talking to the Yle Ykkösaamu (Morning Breakfast) programme, the president also emphasised proper integration of asylum seekers.

“It is important that asylum seekers’ integration is successful,” Niinistö said.

He said refugees are not coming here only for assistance, they also desire to build up their own fortune.

“We here in Finland must recognise our responsibility to humanity,” said the president.

He does not believe that Finland could set an absolute limit on how many refugees the country could take.

“Taking into account, among other things, the employment – or rather unemployment – situation, there is a limit somewhere to how many resources and possibilities are available,” Niinistö said.

He observed that in the light of Finland’s current economic situation, many people believe that asylum seekers are an excessive financial burden.

But, he said, “The situation is that refugees are here and more are coming – no matter what Finland does, unless we draw a line in the sand, close our borders or drive people away.”

The president was asked for his opinion of Prime Minister Juha Sipilä who, in a recent statement, gave up his home in Kempele for asylum seekers. “It was a gesture of what he wanted to give at that moment,” the president said.
