Timo Soini, the chairman of Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party), the second largest component of the ruling three-party alliance government on Saturday rejected the possibility of holding a general meeting to reassess the party’s position regarding staying in the government.

He wrote in his blog that the party leadership’s decision not to hold a general meeting is respected.

“The party has spoken and there will be no discussion,” Soini wrote.

The party decided not to convene a national council, a joint meeting of the party parliamentary group and party leadership with a vote of 11-2.

The party’s third vice-chairman, Sebastian Tynkkynen, insisted on a joint meeting to vote for the continuation of the True Finns in the government coalition.

“The decision is to be complied with and respected. This was stated in cooperation at the end of the meeting.”

Tynkkynen told the national broadcaster YLE on Friday that he would be satisfied with the democratic decision of the party.

He said he was also worried about the future of the party, if criticisms against the party are not addressed within the party democratically.

Tynkkynen believes that the True Finns have acted contrary to the government programme, for example, with their decision for a third Greek bailout and actions on immigration.

STT was unable to reach Tynkkynen or Aleksi Hernesniemi of the party leadership, who announced prior to the meeting to vote in favour of Tynkkynen’s initiative.
