Prime Minister Juha Sipilä on Sunday said that a sustainable number of incoming refugees could be about 10,000 a year.

In an interview with the national broadcaster Yle, Sipilä said Finland is, at the moment, at its limit due to the huge number of asylum applicants.

According to him, the situation regarding refugees in Finland is under control, and the number of refugees arriving in Finland is declining.

The interior ministry has estimated that some 30,000 to 35,000 refugees will arrive in Finland this year. The previous forecast was 50,000 refugees, 10 times higher than the number of refugees arrived last year.

According to Sipilä, it is important to find employment for refugees as quickly as possible, because it will aid in integrating them into Finland quicker.

Although refugees represent a cost to society in the early stages, Sipilä points out that the subsequent immigration offsets the sustainability gap.

“The starting point of immigration is that immigrants begin to bear responsibility for developing the society,” the PM added.
