Former secretary of the Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party) Jarmo Korhonen has accused the Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party-NCP) of gross financial illegalities in the 2006 presidential election.

Korhonen in his newly published book Maan tapa (Way of the Country) wrote that the funding announcement for President Sauli Niinistö’s 2006 election was in serious breach of the law.
Niinistö, however, threw a challenge to probe into the matter.

“I do not approve of the way the funding was collected in 2006, if Korhonen’s allegations are true. It’s good to investigate these claims,” the president told the national broadcaster YLE.

Korhonen claimed, among other things, that Niinistö raised 30,000 euros from the Kokoomus party’s TT Foundation and the Sampo Group.

According to election law passed in 2000, candidates are required to disclose election campaign financing.

In accordance with the law, Niinistö disclosed the support he had received from individuals, companies and from his party.

Kokoomus front organisations and various foundations supported Niinistö’s campaign with approximately 1.4 million euros, while the total campaign budget was approximately 2.2 million euros.

Korhonen argued that Niinistö’s election funding reports are not enough, and that the party should have disclosed the money it had received from other supporters.

“The election campaign goes through the party,” Korhonen told STT.

According to Korhonen, not just the Kokoomus, every party in the 2006 election was guilty of the same illegal activities.

However, in his book, Korhonen said he believes the Kokoomus flaunted the law the worst.
