The youth front of the Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party) will elect its leadership today amid a tense situation as the incumbent President Sebastian Tynkkynen, who was recently expelled from the main party, is contesting for the post.

The Finns Party expelled its third vice chair Tynkkynen on October 23 on charge of breaching discipline as he had published the names of the signatories to the online petition for the party’s General Assembly without permission.

Despite being expelled from the party, he can still win the chair of the youth organisation, as the youth organisation does not require membership of the main party.

The party justified its decision on the fact that Tynkkynen’s dismissal from the party has garnered a lot of attention, as he was elected by the party congress in August as the third vice-chairman, although such dismissal is very rare in Finnish politics.

In apparent high spirits, Tynkkynen attended Saturday’s meeting in Seinäjoki, which on the first day, among other things, adopted the basic principles of the True Finns youth programme.

According to Tynkkynen, his problems with the parent party have not marred his chances of being re-elected chairman of the youth organisation, but have had rather the opposite effect.

“I have received a lot of support from all over Finland. The way the party has acted toward me has been strongly challenged. It is perceived to be wrong,” Tynkkynen told the news agency STT.
