The police dispersed Greenpeace activists from the Tammasaari loading dock in Ruoholahti, Helsinki.

The police operation conducted in the early evening of Monday was peaceful.

There were 17 activists at the loading dock and were detained in order to safeguard the operations of the port. The police, however, released the activists shortly afterwards.

Earlier, the police had urged the activists to leave the loading dock but the activists refused to obey the order.

According to Greenpeace, the activists climbed the equipment used to unload the coal and prevented the unloading of coal from the transporting ship Alppila.

The activists demanded the City of Helsinki to shut the Hanasaari coal power plant and instead use renewable energy as an alternative.

On Sunday, Greenpeace kayaks forced the Alppila to change it course after which Greenpeace activist Sini Saarela climbed the ship.
