The Finnish Immigration Service on Wednesday said it had suspended decision-making on Afghan asylum applications.

The immigration service in a release said it was updating the security assessment of the country.

At the same time, European Union practices and possibilities to return people to Afghanistan are reviewed.

According to the immigration service, guidelines for making decisions on asylum applications are updated on the basis of fresh information obtained.

The pending applications from Afghan nationals are to be decided equally according to the same guidelines that may possibly change, said the authority.

The immigration service said every asylum decision is made in accordance with the guidelines that are valid when the application is decided. The date when the application was submitted makes no difference.

The authority said over 25,000 asylum seekers have arrived in the country up until 3 November and eight per cent of them, equivalent to over 2000 applicants, have come from Afghanistan.
