Social Affairs and Health Minister Hanna Mäntylä is suspected of fraud in connection with application for legal assistance at the end of 2010 when she was not a member of parliament.

The Finns Party minister has denied the allegation of committing an offence.

Mäntylä, however, admitted that she was interrogated during pre-trial investigation for fraud suspicion related to application for legal assistance made in 2009-2010 on the basis of which she received the assistance.

Seiska, a Finnish entertainment magazine, reported that Mäntylä availed a legal assistance of more than 5,500 euros during a child custody trial.

According to the magazine, Mäntylä declared that she was a single mother living alone and in need of free legal assistance from the state when, instead, she was living in cohabitation with a ship captain.

In a release, Mäntylä said she acted as by the instructions obtained from the authorities and counsel.

According to Mäntylä, the issue is about whether she was supposed to declare in the application which she received the income of her partner who lived abroad for over half a year or not.

Mäntylä said she was interrogated on the same subject in 2012. During that time, it was alleged courtesy of whistle blowing that Mäntylä in connection with debt restructuring would have given false information by concealing her partner’s income.

At that time, according to Mäntylä, the investigation ended with a decision to limit the pre-trial investigation. In practice, this means that the investigation was closed and nor was the case heading to court.
