The amount of compensations for innocent detentions has doubled since the turn of 2010, reported the Turun Sanomat, a Finnish language daily.

However, the number of persons detained wrongfully has remained almost same.

According to the state treasury, the long pre-trial detentions of foreign crime suspects have contributed to the rise of compensations.

Foreign suspects are often remanded until end of the trial so that they do not escape during the judicial process. Therefore, the days of compensation accumulate, if the suspected is acquitted.

According to the report, the level of average compensation has also increased. Previously, the average daily compensation was 100 euros; however, currently the figure is 120 euros.
The state pays an average of 1.5 million euros for the so-called “cell-compensation”.
