An elderly person was drowned when he fell from an engine boat at Liperi’s Viinijärvi in north Karelia late Friday night.

The man hailing from Tampere was 60 years old.

The police said the man accompanied by a younger man was coming from a nearby island when he was thrown from the boat into the water.

After this the rowboat fitted with an outboard motor capsized, tossing the second man into the water.

According to the police, the younger man tried unsuccessfully to save the Tampere man, but was able to reach the island by swimming ashore.

Later, he found the older man drowned on the beach. The man was unable to call rescue services until 6.30 in the morning because of water in his phone.

The police are investigating the death with no suspicion of foul play.
