The District Court of Helsinki on Wednesday ordered the release of former head of Helsinki police drug unit Jari Aarnio from detention.

The court said the risk of Aarnio interfering with the investigation process has significantly decreased at the current stage of investigation.

The court, however, imposed a travelling ban on Aarnio.

According to the court, the pre-trial investigations will continue throughout the trial and that it would be unfair to keep Aarnio in remand.

Aarnio has been in remand for about two years.

Riitta Leppiniemi, the lawyer representing the former Helsinki police drug unit chief expressed relief at the decision. “The trial is long and intense. This is much easier from the counsel’s perspective as well,” Leppiniemi remarked.

State Prosecutor Jarmo Hirvonen described the verdict as legally well written. Hirvonen expressed the hope that the possibility of interference does not affect the due process.

More than 20 charges have been levelled against Aarnio, including his alleged involvement with operations in the surveillance company Trevoc as well as the barrel ring suspicions involving importation of hashish to Finland.

First media reports about the police investigation against Aarnio appeared in September 2013. The investigation began in May 2013 and eventually Aarnio was arrested in November 2013.
