Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland-SDP) Chairman Antti Rinne on Wednesday said the country’s long-term foreign policy has changed in the last six months.

Speaking during the Paasikivi Society’s annual meeting, the chief of the country’s largest opposition party particularly referred to the downsizing of development cooperation and crisis management appropriations as well as well hardening of the government’s tone.

“The government’s foreign policy is short-sighted. It is going to bear fruit in the future,” Rinne said.

He said the other countries must be able to rely on Finland’s policy characterised as long-term and predictable. The SDP chair cited examples of government communications with Russia and Sweden which according to him had been unwise.

The government also does not address the prevention of development of threats such as terrorism threat at an early stage, he said.

The SDP chief, however, stressed that the criticism is directed at the government and not the president.
