The refugee registration centre in Tornio will continue with its operations, as the government has decided to continue with the current arrangement of its central activities.

The decision valid for three months comes into force on December 18 when the previous decision expires.

“The registration centre will help with the management of refugee migration and congestion, and all refugees will be registered in a timely manner. This is necessary to ensure effectiveness of the asylum decision-making and managing the costs of reception,” the interior minister said in a statement.

This decision also allows for creation of a new registration centre, if necessary.

The Tornio facility was opened in September, and the centre has already registered about 14,000 asylum seekers.

All asylum seekers who cross into Finland at the Tornio border are taken to the Tornio facility. Applicants are then registered with the centre, before being transferred to reception centres elsewhere in the country.
