Prime Minister Juha Sipilä on Sunday said Finland is ready to pay its fair share to improve the situation of refugees in Turkey, reported the news agency STT.

Sipilä made the remarks after the European Union (EU) had clinched an agreement with Turkey on late Sunday, offering 3 billion euros in aid and promising more access to Ankara for its membership to the bloc.

The prime minister had earlier expressed reservations about the EU aid package to Turkey, a promise of 3 billion euros, because it requires new money from member states.

According to the EU Commission, Finland’s contribution would be more than 35 million euros.

Sipilä said the amount need not be paid in full next year.

Part of the aid package will be financed from the EU budget. The schedule for financing and payment terms is still open.

European Council President Donald Tusk made the announcement at a press conference after Sunday’s summit attended by leaders of the 28-country bloc and visiting Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, reported the news agency Xinhua.
