Finland’s response to French request for security guarantees is most likely going to be realised through strengthening of the military crisis operation in Mali, said Foreign Minister Timo Soini on Tuesday.

A decision on this matter will be made in the near future. Soini, however, did not want to speculate on the number of troops who would be sent to Mali.

“I cannot yet properly assess the exact number [of troops].The last days have shown that you have to be careful with percentages,” Soini said referring to the nominee registration controversy surrounding Finance Minister Alexander Stubb.

Currently about ten Finnish soldiers are involved in the military operations led by the United Nations and the European Union in Mali.

France, above all, has requested military help from fellow EU countries in its fight against the extremist organisation Isis.

Assistance is needed in Mali, so that France can withdraw its own forces and channel more troops in the fights against terrorism, for instance, in Syria.
