The Editor-in-Chief of Lapin Kansa, Antti Kokkonen, has been appointed as a member of the Council for Mass Media (CMM) for the term 2016-2018.

In addition to Kokkonen, journalist Johanna Vehko was also elected as one of the Council's mem-ber, reported Finnish language daily Lapin Kansa.

CMM is a committee of publishers and journalists in the field of mass communication whose task is to interpret good professional practice and defend the freedom of speech and publication.

According to Kokkonen, the importance of CMM is underscored when everyone is an online pub-lisher due to social media.

CMM's membership and commitment to good journalist conduct offers the traditional media a competitive advantage.

“Do not forget the role of CMM as a defender of freedom of speech. That task is still relevant in modern Finland,” Kokkonen said.
