The rhetoric of Independence Day demonstrations has become more intense than in the past, observed Helsinki Police Chief Inspector Seppo Kujala.

The signs and placards of the groups that are participating in the parades and demonstrations would seem to be aimed at other groups instead of the people who are celebrating the holiday inside the presidential palace.

In a meeting on a counter-protest against the 612 torchlight demonstrations, participants have suggested that they will violently disrupt other demonstrations. The counter-protest has characterised itself as an “Angry Birds” game that opposes the right-wing extremist march through the streets.

“The aim of our game is to fire our slingshots through the pigs’ structures, to break through their lines and further discourage their plans!” reads the invitation for the counter-protest.

According to Kujala, by calling to harm others, the invitation suggests that the counter-protest organisers do not want to be regarded as lawful demonstrators.

The organisers have not made themselves known to the police.

On the website 612.fi, the demonstration association described its march as being for all patriotic Finns.

The website also stated that the event is politically independent and not an association representing a political stance.

The 612 association also organised a torchlight demonstration on last year’s Independence Day.

Kujala said the 612 demonstration announcements have all been appropriate, and the demonstration employs security guards.
