Finance Minister Alexander Stubb is intending to push for punishment for the man who hurled a cola drink at him, reported the national broadcaster Yle.

The incident took place on Monday in a cafe at the Tampere city centre.

The thrower of the soft drink shouted at Stubb, calling him a “liar” and “cutter”.

The minister’s bodyguards quickly took away the man and handed him to the police.

Later it emerged that the beverage thrower is a Tampere-based activist opposed to the government’s austerity policy.

The man was a Suomen Kommunistinen Puolue (Communist Party of Finland) candidate in the last spring’s parliamentary elections and last year’s European elections.

The police are investigating the case as a petty criminal damage which is a complainant offence.

The police conduct investigations in such cases only if the victims decide to press charges.
