A would-be refugee reception center caught fire on Friday morning in Rauma, southwest Finland.

The fire occurred in the stairwell of an apartment building, which was planned to serve as a reception center for asylum seekers at the beginning of next year, reported the Finnish national broadcaster Yle.

About a dozen residents in the building were evacuated by police. No casualties were reported.

According to police, preliminary data suggested that the fires were deliberately ignited.

Kari Koski, the mayor of Rauma, stated that the arson attack would sabotage the society as a whole.

Police will investigate the case as aggravated damage, as the suspected arson could threaten dozens of people's lives and health.

Earlier, on Tuesday, a two-story wooden building designed to house refugees was destroyed in a blaze in Kankaanpaa, western Finland. Police suspected that that fire was also set intentionally. Later on that day, the Finnish minister of justice condemned the suspected arson.
