Interior Minister Petteri Orpo received a death threat message last summer, reported Ilta-Sanomat, a Finnish language tabloid.

The message which was sent on the midnight after the Midsummer week was also relayed to the email address of the minister's parliamentary assistant.

According to Ilta-Sanomat, the police assessed the threat to be serious. It is suspected that the threat is related to comments made by the minister on refugees.

Orpo, for instance, had paid a visit to the national broadcaster Yle studio the day before the mes-sage was sent.

The Helsinki police confirmed the news agency STT that a suspected case of unlawful threat was being investigated last summer.

The police, however, refused to divulge who was the target of the threat and how was it carried out.

The investigation is still ongoing, said the lead investigator.

According to Ilta-Sanomat, one man was interrogated during the pre-trial investigation. The man, however, denied involvement. The suspect is reported to have been against immigration.

Orpo, who on Friday was in the Brussels attending an EU summit, did not comment on the mat-ter.
