President Niinistö on Wednesday declared that Finland will continue with its training assistance to Kurdish Peshmerga forces in northern Iraq and could even play a bigger role.

The declaration comes in response to a request submitted by the United States on Tuesday for Finland to take part in the fight against Isis, which means continued presence of Finnish troops in northern Iraq. It also means that additional troops may be deployed.

Finnish soldiers have been training the Kurdish Peshmerga forces in northern Iraq since May, and the experience has so far been positive.

Finland’s current mandate for the mission comprises of up to 50 soldiers until the end of August. The answer to America’s request can be carried out realistically, said Foreign Policy Institute researcher Charly Salonius-Pasternak.

“After all, it’s not a great effort for Finland to send 50 more men,” Salonius said.

The training operations for the Peshmerga soldiers are divided into three sections: infantry training, medical education and leadership training.
