A total of 31,200 persons had applied for asylum in Finland this year, said the Finnish Immigration Service. The figure was updated last Sunday.

The agency said the majority of applicants came from Iraq and Afghanistan. About 20,000 applications came from Iraqis, with about 4,800 coming from Afghanistan.

Somalia had the third highest rate of applications, with nearly 2,000.

The fourth and fifth largest groups were Syrians and Albanians, who had about 750 applications each by the beginning of December.

The number of asylum applications was highest at the end of September. During week 39, there were nearly 4,000 asylum applications.

There were slightly more than 1,500 applications approved for asylum by the end of November, or about a quarter of all applications processed.
