Defence Minister Jussi Niinistö on Wednesday said Finland is ready to oppose a European Commission directive on stricter control of firearms.

The firearm control package, among other things, calls for stricter rules to ban semi-automatic weapons, which will not under any circumstance be allowed to be held by private persons.

Niinistö said the stricter control of firearms for civilian use would poison the country’s defence readiness which is based on reservists.

The parliamentary Defence Committee would also like to see changes brought to the EU directive. According to the committee, the ban would apply to those weapons used during voluntary national defence exercises and in reservist training.

According to Niinistö, the EU Commission’s move to prevent terrorism through the proposal may fall short in the attempt to intervene in the illicit arms trade.

Niinistö plans to accompany Interior Minister Petteri Orpo to meet the EU leadership spearheading the proposal.
