The police want to enhance their presence on the social media. This includes police presence on the sites popular with the youth such as Instagram, trial use of instant video messaging application Snapchat as well as use of YouTube videos.

The goal is to diversify the presence of the police online and increase interaction with citizens as well as to improve crime prevention.

Previously, the communication of authorities via the social media has been mainly one-way, guidance-based and communication dealing with preventive operations, said a joint report of the Emergency Services College and the Police University College.

Similarly, the police previously have used the internet for investigation and as an information gathering tool.

“All the interaction on the social media is increasing,” said Marko Luotonen, director of communications at the National Police Board.

According to the police communication strategy, virtual presence is important.

“If a police van is viewed in the street, it increases people’s sense of security. The same is true for police presence online,” said Luotonen.
