Wed, 16 Dec, 2015 12:27:38 AM FTimes – STT Report, Dec 16 First interim report investigating radicalisation published in Helsinki on Tuesday. Photo – Lehtikuva. Negative sentiment towards Muslims is a major reason why some people have left the country to fight among Isis’s ranks, says the first interim report of an investigation into radicalisation in Finland.
According to the report, Islamophobia provides an excellent breeding ground for radicalisation.
Religious men and women are also travelling to join the fight because of a perceived sense of strong global solidarity, says the report.
However, the study shows religion alone does not explain why some Muslims leave, as their backgrounds vary widely. They represent many nationalities and ethnic backgrounds.
Everyone who has left Finland to join Isis has been young, with one exception.
The information in the interim report is based on data collected from social media and interviews done with close family members of those who have left the country for Syria.
