A new trend has emerged whereby asylum seekers have been arriving in the country aboard Finnlines ferries from Travemünde in Germany.

At the same time, the number of new arrivals via northern border crossing points has reduced.

The deputy chief of Coast Guard’s Gulf of Finland unit, Ismo Siikaluoma told the news agency STT that asylum seekers have been arriving aboard the ferries for a period of around a month.

The number of arrivals varied from about 15 persons to 30 in every trip.

Recently, Sweden has enhanced controls at its borders; however, Siikaluoma could not say whether the new trend is a result of the tightening of the Swedish decision.

According to the Finnish Border Guard estimation as reported by the newspapers’ consortium Lännen Media, it is possible that the number of asylum seekers arriving aboard ferries from Germany is growing.

According to the authorities, the influx of asylum seekers from Germany could be curbed by imposing a penalty fee on the transporters carrying persons whose entry conditions in the country have not been met.

The introduction of the penalty will, however, require legislative amendment.

Finnlines, however, told the Lännen Media that they had acted in full compliance with the law.
