FTimes – STT Report, Dec 17

The Helsinki police are planning on testing body cameras attached to police overalls, which are the same kind used by, for example, the British police.

The cameras will be used by a few dozen police officers during the test, and the test will begin in the near future.

“The camera will see, in practice, what the police officer sees,” said Chief Inspector Jussi Huhtela in a statement.

According to the police department, body cameras improve public relations, reduce violent resistance to arrest and gather evidence for both sides of police transactions.

The body cameras are planned to be used on a limited basis.

“The police will film, in principle, only in public areas. We do intend to collect and save data. The cameras would only be used in private areas as part of a criminal investigation,” Huhtela said.

According to the police, the recordings are highly encrypted and cannot be hacked by outside parties. The cameras are also fastened to the police uniform, so they cannot fall or be torn off.
