Prime Minister Juha Sipilä on Friday revealed that the European Commission’s proposal for a common border guard force surprisingly received huge backing from European Union leaders.

During the two-day summit that ended in Brussels on Friday, the EU leaders promised to spearhead the proposal and reach a common understanding on the issue by the end of June next year.

The Commission has proposed the formation of EU border guard force which would be entitled in time of emergency to intervene on member states external borders, even if a member would not have asked for assistance.

The EU member states have to decide on the common border guard during the term when the Netherlands will take over the Presidency of the EU.

The Dutch Presidency begins at the turn of the year and will last for six months.

The proposal received wide support from state leaders despite not having gone through a detailed discussion, said European Council’s Donald Tusk who presided over the summit.

“The wider approval means that the future of Europe is no longer vulnerable to the fact that the Schengen Borders would be inadequately controlled,” said Tusk
