FTimes- STT Report, Dec 24

A recently completed pre-trial investigation reveals that 2,300 to 2,900 computers were stolen from the City of Espoo.

In addition, there are some 5,000 units of equipment that could not be identified.

The complicated case was investigated as embezzlement. The losses are largely explained as failures and ambiguities in the official records.

The police are not investigating the case further, nor will it be sent to the public prosecutor. The City of Espoo and other relevant parties will continue to clarify the matter.

The preliminary investigation found that the problems with the records and registries are widely known.

According to the investigation, it is possible that someone abused the situation in order to steal the equipment.

The investigation also revealed at least one definite instance in which equipment was stolen.

This is being investigated as aggravated theft, and the preliminary investigation will wrap up in the near future.

Earlier in June, the police started investigation into the loss of more than 9,000 IT devices leased by the City of Espoo from external companies and used by city workers.

The total value of the missing equipment, which includes computers and printers, could be in the millions of euros.

The problem was discovered when the penalties for unreturned rental equipment began piling up. Espoo informed the police of the situation in December 2014.
