New information surfaced Wednesday on the hackers who had carried out a cyber attack on the foreign ministry in 2013.

According to the information from the national broadcaster Yle, the Russian online espionage group Turla carried out the attack as part of a broader campaign.

The Russian security firm Kaspersky has estimated that Turla has hit hundreds of targets in nearly 50 countries.

According to Kaspersky, the state has funded Turla for more than 10 years.

In the strike on the foreign ministry, Turla used fake emails and websites with malicious code.

Foreign Ministry Information Officer Ari Uusikartano could not confirm Yle’s claims to the Finnish news agency STT.

“There is an ongoing investigation by the Finnish Security Intelligence Service [Supo]. We cannot confirm the information, as it is not yet clear,” Uusikartano said.

However, he did confirm that the foreign ministry was not the only target of online espionage.

“Information is exchanged and collected all the time. On this basis, we have been able to confirm that there was a very extensive campaign of espionage, which used very sophisticated tools,” Uusikartano said.

Uusikartano also said that the attacks done by Turla and the attacks on the foreign ministry bear many similarities.

“However, it’s not 100 per cent clear who’s responsible [for the attacks]. In serious hacking offences, there’s rarely 100 per cent certainty who’s behind the attacks,” Uusikartano said.

Supo was not able to comment to STT on the details of the case.
