Big cities in Finland want special status in the future provincial administration, reported the Finnish language newspaper consortium Lännen Media.

The cities have taken a view that uniform governance would poorly serve different areas. One solution could be separate legislation for cities and urban areas.

The cities are mainly afraid sensing that the provincial administration might eat into their urban developments.

They believe that the organisation of social and healthcare benefits would be based on a great extent on the entire province, without exception for cities or urban areas.

Regional administration investigator Lauri Tarasti, however, believes that the anxiety over urban areas is unwarranted.

In his opinion, the framework for autonomous regions should be the same.

Dr. Timo Aro, a political scientist who has studied the role of cities, told the Lännen Media that Finland should look to Germany for guidance.

Some German cities have been given special status.
