Fragments of a canister fired from a riot police gun hit the eyes of a demonstrator during the Independence Day protests in Helsinki, reported the Finnish language daily Helsingin Sanomat quoting an NBI investigation.

The protester intends to demand compensation from the state on the grounds of excessive use of force by the police.

The police used a FN 303 riot gun during the protests after stones, among other things, were hurled towards them.

The police fired seven gunshots during the clash.

Detective Chief Inspector Toni Uusikivi said fragments of less than a millimetre in size were removed from the eye of a demonstrator by a doctor after the Independence Day protests.
The fragments were sent to the National Bureau of Investigation laboratory for examination.

According to Uusikivi, the results of the examination confirmed that the fragments, based on chemical composition and appearance, correspond to the contents of the pellets fired from the compressed air guns used by the police.
