FTimes-STT Report, Jan 17

Germany spied on Finland via telephone lines in the 2000s, reported the national broadcaster YLE on Saturday quoting an intelligence monitoring list of about 10 years ago.

The intelligence list, according to YLE, included more than 200 telephone lines in about 30 European countries.

Finnish telephones were monitored on calls from Helsinki to Paris, Brussels, Shanghai, Luxembourg, Budapest, and Reims.

The intelligence operation lasted from 2004 to 2008.

In an interview with YLE, Security Police Senior Inspector Thomas Portaankorva said the spying allegations are not surprising.

According to him, it is possible and even likely that Finnish calls abroad are monitored in transit.

The German intelligence monitoring list became public last October in a Slovenian journalism programme called Epilog.
