The number of foreign national suspected in rape cases seems to be lower in re-spect to the reporting threshold and the increase in the number of asylum seekers.

Last year, the number of foreign national suspected of rape cases increased from 180 to 217, announced the Commissioner of National Police Board, Seppo Kolehmainen at a press conference in Helsinki on Friday.

About 32,000 asylum seekers arrived in the country during the last year.

According to the police commissioner, the number of foreign nationals suspected of rape rose by nearly 20 percent last year.

In total, rape cases increased by just under four percent compared to the 2014 statistics.

On the other hand, the number of foreign nationals suspected in assault cases rose from 3,200 to 4,000.

The police, however, said the rise in the number of asylum seekers has increased the number of emergency calls due to for instance, unrest in the reception centres.

Last year 12 asylum seekers were suspected of aggravated rape, 13 in rape cases, 22 in sexual harassment and 2 were suspected of forced sexual acts.

Kolehmainen pointed out that harassment committed by a group of foreigners is a new phenomenon in the country.

The statistics takes into account that not all suspects necessarily live in the country.

The police said incidents during the New Year's period were not reflected in the statistics and were registered in January statistics.
