Anti- and pro-refugee groups held separate demonstrations in Helsinki and Seinäjoki on Saturday.

Anti-immigrant organisation Rajat Kiini (Close the Borders) brought out a procession at Narinkkatori in Helsinki with about 150 people taking part.

The demonstrators carried various banners and festoons with slogans like “Take Asylum-seekers’ Rights Away! Close the Borders!”

A pro-immigrant demonstration was also organised in Helsinki, but attended by only a few, who cried out, among other things, “Use your brains!”.

The Helsinki police arrested one person from the demonstration, but he was released from jail in the early evening.

At the same time, an event titled “No Racism in My Name” was held at Kauppatori in Seinäjoki with about 100 people taking part.

Another pro-immigrant demonstration was held at Petäjävettä in Central Finland, where firebombs were thrown at a refugee centre on Thursday.

About 70 people joined the programme. One of the organisers, Vicar Seppo Ojala, said the people of Petäjävettä wanted to express their opposition to such attacks on refugee centres.

“I think 80-90 per cent local residents think positively of the asylum seekers,” said Ojala, whose congregation organised the demonstration at the reception centre.
