Foreigners receive tougher sentences for rape than native Finns, reported the Sunnuntaisuomalainen, a joint Sunday publication of four local newspapers.
Nearly half of the foreigners convicted at the lower courts are sentenced to unconditional imprisonment.
However, unconditional imprisonment for Finns account to about a quarter of the convictions.
The difference in the nature of convictions, however, calls for a more accurate research, said Hannu Niemi, planning officer at the University of Helsinki Institute of Criminology and Legal Policy.
“One possibility is that the nature of the crimes committed by foreigners is different. They might be more violent or brutal,” said Niemi.
According to Niemi, this does not result from foreigners being more violent but is circumstantial.
Cases of rape dismissed or expired are relatively the same irrespective of nationalities.
