Two people drowned in the waters of Vaasa Archipelago on Saturday night, said the police.

The men were riding a snowmobile towards a cottage located on the archipelago.

A man who was already in the cottage waiting for the two men raised the alarm after failing to hear from the oncoming visitors.

The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) of Turku alerted the Vallgrund coast guard hovercraft and the Raippaluoto volunteer fire department and emergency rescue dive unit.

One of the bodies was discovered in the area between Brunskär and Aspskär. The rescue department later found the second body in the water. Both men wore life vests but only one of the vests had been triggered.

The coast guard has warned that the ice condition in the sea areas is unpredictable.
