The number of accidents suffered by reservists during their refresher training last year almost tripled compared to previous year, reported reservist magazine Reserviläinen.

A total of 67 cases of military accidents were recorded during refresher exercises last year. The previous year saw only 24 accidents.

A third of last year's injuries were sprains and strains. There were three cases of hearing impairment and six broken bones.

According to the magazine, the increase in accidents is largely due to the increasing number of refresher training days.

Last year, 18000 reservists attended the courses compared to only 6000 in the previous year.

The new Military Injuries Act, intended to refine the definition and compensation for injuries received by reservists, conscripts and staff working in crisis management, comes into effect in July, the magazine reported.
