The government has undertaken an initiative to restrict the social security support given to the immigrants having residence permit, reported the Finnish language daily Helsingin Sanomat.

A draft  which is currently being prepared by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health proposes that the support extended to immigrants granted residence permit would be differentiated from residence-based social security and will be replaced with integration support.

In principle, the proposed 485.50 euros a month for an individual living independently would be higher than the basic income support.

The amount could, however, be cut by up to 40 per cent, if an immigrant does not participate in integration programmes.

As a condition to be eligible for the integration support, an immigrant has to liaise with the employment authorities.

The lowered social security support was proposed in autumn while drawing up the government action plan on asylum policy.

Social Affairs and Health Minister Hanna Mäntylä has forwarded the proposal.
