The Central Finland police have arrested a man on suspicion of a 20-year-old homicide.

Nokia’s city councillor Markku Mallat was murdered in early April 1996. His body was discovered near the Nokia Koskimäki school.

The man was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter. The police have in the past, in 1996 and 2001, heard testimony from the man as a witness.

“The reports given by the man then are inconsistent with what the police have discovered via other means,” said Detective Chief Inspector Jari Kinnunen.

Late last year, the police interrogated a Nokia man in his 50s on suspicion of manslaughter. According to Kinnunen, the man in custody now is a different person.

The statute of limitations for manslaughter is 20 years.

The arrest was first reported by the Finnish language daily Iltalehti.
