There are major inconsistencies in the confession of a suspect in the Ylivieska church fire, said the investigating officer, Detective Chief Inspector Ari Rutanen in a statement on Monday.

According to Rutanen, the suspect has confessed involvement in burning the church, but has not directly confessed to starting the fire.

“It appears that these sad events are the results of that individual’s problems,” Rutanen said.

Rantanen, however, did not comment on the nature of these problems.

According to the lead investigator, racism, radicalism or any other extremist thinking do not appear to have motivated the act. Intoxicants are not believed to have played a role either.

Rutanen proposed that the suspect be detained. The request for detainment must be presented by Tuesday noon to the Raahe-Ylivieska District Court.

When the Fire and Rescue Service reached the venue on Saturday night, it was already clear that nothing could be done to salvage the church.

“When our units arrived, the task became to extinguish the exterior [of the church] and to protect the environment,” said fire chief Jorma Rasila of the Jokilaakso Rescue Department.

The church’s own fire-fighting system could not be used due to the high heat and flames.

According to Rasila, the work of extinguishing the fire will continue until Tuesday.

The police announced exceptionally early in the case that the suspect is a native Finn.

A large Lutheran church in Ylivieska, northern Finland, was totally destroyed Saturday night in a fire lit apparently on purpose.
